An Intraocular Lens is an artificial lens that is implanted during surgery to replace the natural lens that has become clouded due to cataracts. After a surgeon removes your cataract/clouded lens, he or she will implant the intraocular lens you discussed before your procedure. There are many lenses to choose from for your surgery. It’s important to know what each type of lens can offer, so you can make an informed decision. During your consultation, you and the surgeon will discuss your options and come up with a solution based on your needs and your desired outcome.
Our standard lenses are designed to correct vision at one focal point- usually distance vision. You will likely require prescription or reading glasses to correct near vision.
In some eyes, the surface of the cornea is oval shaped rather than round, which scatters light across multiple focal points. This is called a corneal astigmatism and can cause blurred or distorted vision. Toric lenses are designed to minimize the irregularities from the cornea and can also correct your astigmatism at the time of cataract surgery. Your eye doctor will advise if you require a toric lens.
These lenses are designed to provide a full range of vision- near, far and in between. We offer Panoptix and Vivity lenses.
Alcon PanOptix® is a next-generation intraocular lens (IOL) that reduces the need for glasses after cataract surgery and provides clear vision at all distances. Alcon PanOptix® lenses are designed to provide good vision in most day-to-day situations with reduced need for glasses, or contact lenses after cataract surgery. After your vision settles, Alcon PanOptix® lenses are designed to allow you to enjoy most of your daily activities without glasses, including reading a book, ordering from a menu, seeing clearly in the mirror, and wearing only non-prescription sunglasses. You may find wearing glasses further improves your vision for a few detailed tasks, which is common for any lens.
Vivity is a first-of-its-kind, non-diffractive extended depth of focus IOL with Alcon’s proprietary non-diffractive X-WAVE™ technology, which stretches and shifts light without splitting it. Vivity delivers monofocal-quality distance (far) with excellent intermediate (at arm’s length) and functional near vision (up close). The lens expands Alcon’s growing portfolio of presbyopia-mitigating IOLs to meet the needs of cataract patients who are interested in restoring their visual performance and improving their lifestyle.
