What are cataracts and how are they treated?

Cataracts occur when the natural lens in your eye becomes cloudy, blocking light from passing through your eye and blurring your vision. Cataracts develop naturally and may make it difficult for you to participate in daily activities, such as reading, working, or driving. The only way to remove cataracts and restore clear vision is through surgery. Modern cataract surgery, which is one of the safest and most effective procedures, replaces your natural cataract-affected lens with an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL).

Before You Arrive

On the day of surgery, you may take all your normal medications. There is no need to fast prior to the procedure.  Please do not wear any make up or jewellery.

Please bring an updated list of your medications along with your MCP card.

Please bring a driver with you.

What to Expect

When you arrive for your procedure, you will be registered by our reception staff and brought into our preoperative area. Here the nurse will wash the area around your eye and give you drops to dilate and numb your eye for the procedure. When your eyes are fully dilated, you will be positioned on a stretcher. You will have to lay flat for the procedure. Once you are in the operating room, your eye will be cleaned for the procedure and a sterile drape will be placed over your face to keep the area clean during the surgery. You may see some light or movement, but you won’t see what is happening to your eye. You may feel pressure during the procedure, but should not feel anything painful or sharp. Normally, the procedure takes from 5-10 minutes, but you will be in the operating room for 15-20 minutes. After the procedure is complete, you will go to the recovery room, where you will be monitored for 15 minutes, while the nurse goes over your post-operative instructions. The doctor will see you before you are discharged.
